Whoever finds him gets to hide him again (the trick is being stealth!) and then we all have a good time searching. The winner is the person who hid him last when December 25th comes along.

We're so excited to be welcoming Leah Stewart to Knickers for BookFest 2011 Saturday, June 18th from 10am to 1pm!

I fell completely in love with Leah's writing when I read her book The Myth of You and Me many years ago. It's a fabulous story about the sole-mate kind of friendships we have when we're younger. It's a must read for anyone who's had that very best friend in high school and/or college, and lost touch thru the years.

Her new book, Husband and Wife has just been released in paperback. You'll love this writers ability to create characters that are real, messy and trying to figure things out just like the rest of us.

Here's a little more about Leah. I hope you'll stop by Knickers and meet this very special author. You'll also be able to purchase her books, which will come with our new Summer Reading bookmark that offers you savings on your purchases at Knickers all summer long!

Leah Stewart was born in 1973 at Laughlin Air Force Base inTexas, where her father was stationed. As a child, she lived in Virginia, Idaho, England, Kansas, and Virginia again. She went to high school in Clovis, New Mexico, a town featured in her second novel, The Myth of You and Me. She always wanted to be a writer.

At Vanderbilt University, Leah was the editor of the student newspaper, the Vanderbilt Hustler, and spent summers interning for the Tennessean in Nashville and the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. The latter experience inspired her firstnovel, Body of a Girl. After college, Leah went to the MFA program at the University of Michigan, and then moved to Boston, where she put her master’s degree to work by taking a job as asecretary for the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She had an office with a door, and she wrote most of her first novel there.

Since then, Leah has worked as a secretary at Duke, a cataloguer in a used bookstore, a magazine editor, a copyeditor, and a staff member at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. She has been a visiting professor at Vanderbilt University, Sewanee, and Murray State University. The recipient of a 2010 NEA Literature Fellowship, Leah teaches in the University of Cincinnati’s creative writing program, and lives in Cincinnati with her husband and two children.

Hobbies, Interests & Enthusiasms...

Lately, because of my daughter taking classes, I've developed a fascination with the ballet. It's a little late for me to start, but I do take a fabulous dance/exercise class called Rhythm & Motion at the Cincinnati Ballet, where my daughter takes her classes. We also have season tickets and I've been surprised to find how much I enjoy the performances. Historically I've been so focused on language that it's been harder for me to enjoy the art forms without it (classical music, say), so the ballet is broadening my aesthetic horizons. I've interviewed one of the dancers here in hopes of including a ballerina character in my next book.

I also really, really like television. And reading blogs by very smart people who write about television, like Heather Havrilesky at Salon. I swear I'm not just zoning out on the boob tube—a season of a TV show has a lot in common narratively with a novel. Much more than a short story or even a movie.

"Bra Man" helps out women in need

(Oct 8) - It may be concealed under clothes but the bra is a critical garment that can be expensive to buy, and that people often don't think to donate. Now, a Chicago man is working to change that for women in need. Oz du Soleil runs a charitable effort aimed at collecting new or gently used bras and donating them to lower-income girls and women, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Oz du Soleil's Chicago home is filled with piles of new and used
bras ready to be donated to underprivileged girls and women.

He collects the undergarments through donations via his blog. Du Soleil quickly surpassed his initial goal of 1,000 bras and has since collected more than 3,000 in total. His home is filled with boxes of bras in many colors, style and sizes.

Schools, homeless shelters and churches are among the organizations that have received the donations. He has given away over 1,400 to date.

Getting the word out about his trove can be tricky. "Usually they ask if I'm serious, and then I just tell them I've sent more than 1,400 bras around the world," du Soleil told the Chicago Tribune. "I am careful about it since people do look at you like you're some weirdo."

How did du Soleil come to be known as the "bra man"? He traces the roots of his nonprofit endeavor back to an earlier digital art project where he posted pictures of bras along with their owners' stories. When his girlfriend came across the leftovers, she donated them to a local school.

"I was really moved by the response," du Soleil told the Tribune. "The girls wanted them because most of them had one bra to go to P.E., to parties, to the grocery store, to the doctor. It was about giving them dignity."

We love this little savory cheesy cracker, so we served it at our bra fitting event. Here's the recipe in case you'd like to make them.

2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (room temp)
1 1/2 cups flour
1 stick of butter softened
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

Mix all ingredients in a food processor until blended. Form dough into a log, wrap in parchment paper and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Slice dough into 1/4 inch bites. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 12-15 minutes on a cookie sheet lined with a Silpat mat.

Pink Tulips!

It's become one of our favorite traditions! During the month of October, we'll share with you some pink tulip bulbs. Plant them now, and when they bloom in May, they'll remind you to get your mammogram.

Planting tips:
Plant tulips in late fall in well-drained soil. Grow them where they will get at least 5-6 hours of sun a day; full sun in preferable. Dig the soil to a depth of 8-12" and work in Bulb Booster or other bulb food. Set the bulbs 4-8" deep and 4-8" apart, depending on size and variety.

We have to admit that we've been quietly anticipating something. Of course we're always discrete about what happens at Knickers. But we can share with you, in the last year we've seen a trend. Our customers have talked about staying in, having dinners at home, foregoing vacation travel, reconnecting. In addition, we've seen our intimate lingerie sales increase.

So we've been expecting a little recession induced baby boom. And, as a result, we've added to our selection of nursing bras.

Just as we predicted, there's been quite the demand. We've had lots of phone calls asking for nursing bras. In keeping with our reputation for offering a fuller size selection, our newest nursing bra is sized 32 to 38, C to H cups. It's a smooth jacquard under wire bra, with an easy clasp for releasing the cup. It's feminine, supportive and functional.

Knickers of Hyde Park is Cincinnati's premiere bra fit specialist and intimate apparel haven! And, they're our "sister store"!

Jenny Schneider started Knickers of Hyde Park 10 years ago. We met when we both worked for Knickers of Glen Ellyn. We became fast friends and dreamed of one day having our own little lingerie boutiques.

Although we're separate stores, we shop together for merchandise and transfer items back and forth to accommodate our customer's needs.

There are several people who have been in both stores. I love when someone walks in and asks if Knickers is a "chain store". I immediately know they've been to Cincinnati and to Knickers of Hyde Park!

I visited this past week and had the best time with Jenny, her family, and the Knickers girls. It's such a beautiful store. She inspires me every day!

I just wanted to share with all of you who so kindly participated in, and donated to, our Pajama Dinner at Cab's. This is a note from Jessica, Hephzibah Children's Association - Western Auxiliary President, about your amazing generosity:

"The Auxiliary will use the funds raised to finance a
"Good Bye, Good Luck" duffel bag program.  When
children are dropped at Hephzibah's Diagnostic Shelter
they typically have a grocery bag holding all of their
belongings (maybe 2 or 3 things).  When they are
placed in a foster home, an adoptive home, or returned
to their birth parent(s) they usually leave with one
or two trash bags filled with their stuff.  Amazing
companies like yours are so generous to these
children.
So our Auxiliary is buying duffel bags with a HCA bag
tag for them to carry all of their clothes, shoes, and
toys.  We'll include a toothbrush, toothpaste, brush,
and memory book for them to fill with new memories."

8 Common Bra Fitting Solutions

The ABCD and DDs of bras

Research shows that 75% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. If you find you're experiencing any of these 8 common bra problems, don't fret, we can help!

Bra fittings are always complimentary at Knickers, and we offer more than 20 years of bra fitting experience. There's always a fitter on staff, and we're open every day of the week! Mention this blog post and receive a free gift with your bra purchase.*

8 Common Bra Problems and Solutions:

The underwire is poking you.
Ouch! When fitting a bra, you want to make sure the wire is completely off your breast tissue. If you’re getting poked, your cup size is likely too small.

Straps are slipping off your shoulder.
Don’t you hate when this happens? Slipping straps is usually a fit issue. If the band of the bra is too large around, the straps will be positioned too wide for your figure, causing them to slip off your shoulders. A smaller band size would be worth a try. Some people do have a slopped shoulder that can cause straps to slip off. In this case, racerback bras, or bra strap converters like Hollywood “Hook Ups” bra converting clip will do the trick.

The straps are digging into your shoulder.
There’s good news! You don’t have to have painful shoulders anymore. Actually, your straps should only be contributing about 5% of the bra’s support. With the right fit, the majority of the bras support will come from the band and the cups. You should literally be able to slip a strap off your shoulder and not have much impact on your lift. The solution is often a smaller band size.

Your breast tissue comes out the bottom of the cups.
Tired of always adjusting your bra? Your bra should stay put when you move. If it’s shifting or lifting when you do, it’s likely not a proper fit. In most cases, a tighter band and fuller cup will be ideal.

Your breasts are spilling over the cups.
Overflow can be eliminated! If there isn’t room in the cup for all of your breast tissue, the cup is too small. A larger cup size, or a fuller fitting bra, will most likely be appropriate.

The Band is riding up your back.
Oh no! The back band of the bra is where you get all your support. If the band is riding up your back the band size is too large. The back of the bra should stay even (or lower) than the bottom of the cup in the front.

The underwire is pushing out between your breasts.
It's nice to have a handy place to stow our lipstick, but you truly don’t have to live with your wire poking out. There are two possibilities; either the bra style isn’t right for your figure, or the cup is too shallow. A properly fitted bra will give you a complete separation and tack the underwire snug against your chest wall. What to do with your lipstick? We suggest checking out Georgia Rae for a new handbag! Perfect!

The bra cups are puckering.
Sometimes a strap or band adjustment can eliminate puckering in cups. Also, making sure all your breast tissue is in the cup will help as well. If that doesn’t do the trick, the cup is too big. A smaller cup will probably be the answer.
